Drug take-back day in James City County

epillsJames City County, Va. – The public will soon have a chance to properly dispose of unwanted prescription drugs and OTC drugs in James City County.

On April 27, the James City County Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will be at the James City County Recreation Center (5301 Longhill Rd.) from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction.

The program is anonymous and no questions will be asked.

Prescription and over the counter solid dosage medications (i.e. tablets and capsules) will be accepted.

Intra-venous solutions, injectables, and needles will not be accepted, nor will illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamines.

Taking action to fight hunger in Gloucester

TSA FOOD DRIVE FLYER 3_21_13Gloucester, Va. - The Salvation Army is seeking all Gloucester/Mathews County schools, churches, and community members to help fight hunger by participating in the Spring Food Drive.

Officials say the food pantry is low, and help is needed to restock the shelves.

What is needed?

Dry goods, such as cereal, rice, and pasta; canned meats; peanut butter and jelly; and other various canned goods.

Unattended candle causes house fire in James City County

James City County, Va. – Fire crews say an unattended candle caused a house fire Monday night in James City County.

It happened at 10:50 p.m. on Monday, April 1. Thirteen James City County and Williamsburg Fire and EMS units responded to the burning home, located in the 100 block of Dehaven Court.

The caller reported hearing a smoke alarm sounding in a neighbor’s apartment with the smell of smoke outside the apartment.

The caller indicated that they could not get anyone to come to the door and that smoke was coming from the door.

Crews arrived at 10:51 p.m. Light smoke was seen showing from the front door and a bedroom window on the side of the two-story apartment.

This apartment building contained 10 occupied apartment units.

Crews extinguished the fire, which was in a bedroom.

What does the transportation bill mean for Hampton Roads?

Richmond, Va. (WTKR) – Governor Bob McDonnell has completed his review of the major transportation funding compromise passed by the General Assembly in late February, according to an official release.

Governor McDonnell’s key policy amendments include:

• Reducing the proposed vehicle titling tax increase from 4.3 percent to 4.15 percent. After hearing from automobile dealers and constituents, the governor proposed this amendment to ensure the increase is reduced and does not adversely impact the number of vehicles purchased.

All ABC Stores Will Close For Easter Sunday

Richmond, Va. - In observance of the Easter holiday, The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) stores will close on Sunday, March 31.

Stores will operate normal hours on Monday, April 1.

UPDATE: York County drops charges against two accused in death of man found in burning truck

UPDATE: NewsChannel 3 has confirmed that officials withdrew all charges for Hassan Harvey and Kasey Rubio in York County. They will now face charges in Norfolk.

Although the body was found in York County inside of a burning truck, officials say they’ve determined that the murder did not occur there. Harvey and Rubio will face charges in York County later, but authorities are allowing Norfolk to handle the serious charges right now. 

York Co., Va. – The man found dead in a burning Mac Tools truck in York County Friday was killed in Norfolk, according to police.

The victim is identified as Austin S. King, 56, of Virginia Beach.

Police have arrested two people in connection to his death – Hassan Harvey, 34, of Norfolk and Kasey Rubio, 19, of Portsmouth.

Women’s basketball coach at William and Mary is out

Williamsburg, Va. – The College of William and Mary announced Tuesday that they will not renew their contract with women’s basketball coach Debbie Taylor.

The Tribe finished 8-22 with a conference record of 6 -12. Taylor, a 1986 graduate of William and Mary, is the program’s all-time wins leader with 146 -265 record. She was named the 2006 CAA Coach of the Year.

William and Mary Athletic Director terry Driscoll announced a national search will begin immediately.

“I want to thank Debbie Taylor for all her contributions to the program for the past 14 seasons,” Driscoll said. “She was always a first-class representative of her program and the College of William and Mary. I sincerely wish her well as she explores other career opportunities.”
