Williamsburg’s Green Team Launches a Second Green Challenge for Residents & Businesses

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—Are you a resident or local business of the City of Williamsburg that is working to lessen the City's carbon footprint? Well the City of Williamsburg’s Green Challenge wants to know!

The City of Williamsburg is sponsoring yet another Green Challenge for Williamsburg residents and businesses in hopes to make Williamsburg a greener community. In the fall of 2010 eighteen Williamsburg businesses took the City’s first Green Business Challenge and then in 2011 fifty Williamsburg residents took part in the first Green Residential Challenge.

“We had such an enthusiastic response with our first challenges that we wanted to continue the momentum, learn of any new activities by our previous participants and inspire some first-time honorees as well,” stated the Assistant City Manager and Chair of the City’s Green Team, Jodi Miller.

Gloucester restoration project gets $15,000 grant

Gloucester restoration project gets $15,000 grant

Remember when you could pull into a gas station, and someone came running out to pump your gas, wash your windows and check your tires for no extra charge?  Be careful.  You may give away your age!  Well, Gloucester still has a filling station on Main Street, dating back to 1930.

The Edge Hill Service Station is a unique landmark for the Middle Peninsula and one of the oldest surviving examples of the distinctive “Denver-style” Texaco in Virginia.

Years of neglect have taken a toll.  But now, the restoration project is getting a boost from the company that specializes in power restoration.  The Dominion Virginia Power foundation has given a $15,000 grant to help fund energy-efficient improvements.  The Fairfield Foundation is organizing the project.  Its goal is to involve many “green” components, such as the reuse of original building materials; geothermal heating and cooling; and wastewater recycling.
